USA striker Folarin Balogun has reflected on the influence of his Nigerian heritage, saying it has shaped him into a stronger and more determined individual while remaining a source of immense pride.

The Monaco forward was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Nigerian parents before growing up in London. Eligible to represent the United States, England, or Nigeria at international level, Balogun ultimately chose to commit his international future to the United States.

The 24-year-old has emerged as one of the standout performers at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He scored twice in the USA’s opening victory over Paraguay before earning the Superior Player of the Match award following his side’s 2-0 win against Australia.

His impressive displays played a key role in Mauricio Pochettino’s team reaching the Round of 32, where the tournament co-hosts will take on Bosnia and Herzegovina after achieving the historic milestone.

Speaking with Amplify Africa, Balogun explained how his Nigerian roots have helped shape his mentality, giving him the resilience, ambition, and drive to perform at the highest level.

“Coming from Nigeria, it has turned me to a warrior. It has made me strong, it has given me a lot of hunger and desire, and something I’m very proud of,” Balogun said.

Having already secured qualification for the knockout stage, Balogun was rested for the USA’s final group game against Turkey, which ended in a 3-2 defeat. Despite the loss, the striker was encouraged by the team’s overall display.

“The boys put in a good performance. It’s always difficult to come in and play against any side when the team hasn’t played together regularly.

“I think the boys did their best. The most important thing is the game on Wednesday (Round of 32 clash).”

The United States will face Bosnia and Herzegovina at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium on July 2, with victory securing a place in the Round of 16 for Pochettino’s side.
