The Super Falcons will continue their title defence when they face familiar foes Cameroon in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca on Sunday.
The defending champions booked their place in the last eight in dramatic fashion, thrashing Egypt 6-2 in their final Group C fixture to finish second behind debutants Malawi.
Nigeria had endured a difficult start to their campaign, suffering a shock 3-2 defeat to Malawi before responding with a narrow 1-0 victory over Zambia.
Cameroon, meanwhile, progressed unbeaten from Group D after recording victories over Mali and Ghana before playing out a 1-1 draw with Cape Verde. The Indomitable Lionesses finished top of the group with seven points.

Nigeria Eye Another Semi-Final
The Super Falcons will be looking to maintain their remarkable record of reaching the latter stages of the competition when they take on Cameroon.
Nigeria have reached the semi-finals in each of their previous WAFCON appearances, and another victory on Sunday would secure a 14th appearance in the last four.
Failure to advance would mark the first time Nigeria have failed to reach at least the semi-finals of a centralised WAFCON tournament.
The Super Falcons are also chasing a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Victory over Cameroon would secure Nigeria a record-extending 10th appearance at the global tournament.
Nigeria have featured at every edition of the Women’s World Cup since the inaugural tournament in 1991.
Cameroon Stand in Nigeria’s Way
Cameroon have enjoyed a strong campaign so far and will head into the quarter-final with confidence after going unbeaten in the group stage.
They opened their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Mali before defeating Ghana 1-0. A 1-1 draw against Cape Verde in their final match was enough to see them finish top of Group D.
The Indomitable Lionesses will now attempt to end Nigeria’s dominance in their WAFCON meetings and reach the semi-finals for the first time since 2018.
Nigeria Dominate Head-to-Head Record
Sunday’s encounter will be the 14th meeting between Nigeria and Cameroon at the WAFCON finals, making it the most-played fixture in the history of the competition.
Nigeria have won 11 of their previous 13 meetings, including nine victories in open play and two triumphs on penalties. Cameroon have won once, while the other encounter ended in a draw.
The two sides have met at every stage of the competition, including the group stage, quarter-finals, semi-finals, third-place play-off and final.
Their previous five knockout meetings, excluding finals and third-place play-offs, have all gone Nigeria’s way.
The Super Falcons recorded 6-0, 5-0 and 5-1 victories in the 1998, 2006 and 2010 semi-finals respectively. The 2018 semi-final ended goalless before Nigeria advanced on penalties, while the Super Falcons also defeated Cameroon 1-0 in the 2022 quarter-finals.
Nigeria have dominated their three group-stage meetings, winning 3-0 in 2000 and 2-1 in 2012, with the other encounter ending in a 2-2 draw in 2004.
The teams have faced each other twice in third-place play-offs. Nigeria prevailed on penalties after a 1-1 draw in 2008, while Cameroon claimed a 1-0 victory in 2012.
They have also contested three WAFCON finals, with Nigeria winning all three: 5-0 in 2004, 2-0 in 2014 and 1-0 in 2016.
Team News
Nigeria will welcome back Jennifer Echegini and Tosin Demehin after the pair missed the 6-2 victory over Egypt through suspension.
Echegini was suspended after picking up yellow cards in Nigeria’s opening two matches, while Demehin received a straight red card against Zambia.
Their return will provide a boost to head coach Justin Madugu as the Super Falcons prepare for a difficult knockout encounter.
Oshoala Fitness Being Monitored
Asisat Oshoala is expected to return to the squad having featured in training, although doubts remain over whether the experienced forward is fit enough to start.
The 31-year-old started two of Nigeria’s group-stage matches and showed her quality with two goals, but she was forced off in the first half of the 6-2 victory over Egypt.
Nigeria will hope Oshoala is available, particularly with the team needing to maintain the attacking momentum they showed against Egypt.
Cameroon Sweat Over Marie Ngah Manga
Cameroon will also have a fitness concern of their own, with Marie Ngah Manga’s availability being monitored ahead of the quarter-final.
The 23-year-old forward has impressed at the tournament, scoring three goals in two appearances.
However, she was substituted in the 67th minute against Ghana and subsequently remained an unused substitute during Cameroon’s 1-1 draw with Cape Verde.
If fit, Ngah Manga will represent a major threat to a Nigerian defence that has struggled for consistency throughout the tournament.
The Super Falcons conceded five goals in three group-stage matches, the most they have ever allowed at a single WAFCON edition.
Morocco and Algeria Already Through
The winners of Sunday’s quarter-final will join hosts Morocco and Algeria in the semi-finals.
Morocco defeated South Africa 2-1 in their quarter-final, while Algeria secured a 2-1 victory over ten-player Ivory Coast.
Both North African sides have already secured qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup by reaching the last four, with all four WAFCON semi-finalists guaranteed places at next year’s global tournament.

The Super Falcons’ quarter-final clash with Cameroon will kick off at 6:00pm Nigerian time at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca on Sunday.
