The Flying Eagles ended their 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship campaign on a disappointing note after suffering a 4-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the final at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast, on Sunday.
Nigeria, who were aiming to reclaim the regional title, were unable to produce a response after Burkina Faso once again proved too strong, having already defeated the seven-time African champions 2-0 in the group stage.
The defeat means the Flying Eagles will miss out on the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), while Burkina Faso secured qualification to next year’s continental tournament, joining hosts Ghana as WAFU Zone B’s representatives.
The result also ends Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup, as the U-20 AFCON will serve as the qualifying tournament for the global competition.

Despite naming a strong starting lineup, Nigeria found themselves in serious trouble before half-time as the Young Stallions produced a clinical attacking display.
Alassana Bagayogo opened the scoring before Asharaf Tapsoba and Issouf Dabo added two more goals to give Burkina Faso a commanding 3-0 lead at the break.
The Flying Eagles responded after the interval and reduced the deficit through Abdulmuiz Adeleke, raising hopes of a possible comeback.
However, Burkina Faso remained composed and sealed a convincing victory when Fadil Barro scored late in the game to restore their three-goal advantage and complete a memorable unbeaten campaign.
The defeat means Nigeria finish the tournament as runners-up, while Burkina Faso lift the WAFU B U-20 title after going through the competition without defeat.
Despite the disappointing result, Adeleke ended the tournament on a personal high after claiming the Golden Boot award as the competition’s top scorer.
Burkina Faso goalkeeper Rahim Ouattara was named the tournament’s best goalkeeper and received the Golden Glove, while his compatriot Mohamed Zongo was voted the Most Valuable Player.
For the Flying Eagles, the final defeat represents a major setback, as Nigeria will now miss both the 2027 U-20 AFCON and the opportunity to compete for a place at the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
