Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman has expressed delight following Atlético Madrid’s impressive2-0 victory over Barcelona in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal clash at the Spotify Camp Nou.

The Nigerian international featured for 60 minutes before making way for Alexander Sørloth, who struck 10 minutes later to seal the win for the visitors.

Earlier in the contest, Julián Álvarez had opened the scoring with a stunning free kick just before halftime, seconds after Barcelona were reduced to ten men. Pau Cubarsí was shown a straight red card following a VAR review for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

The result hands Atlético Madrid a significant advantage heading into the second leg at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano next Tuesday. Diego Simeone’s side require only a draw to progress, while even a narrow one-goal defeat would be enough to see them through to the semifinals.

Reacting after the game, Lookman praised the collective effort of his teammates, highlighting the importance of discipline and unity throughout the encounter.

“Very, very happy with the result. Good performance from everybody as well. 2-0 away from home, it’s never easy to come here and keep a clean sheet. Very positive,” he said.

Lookman also commended the team’s resilience in navigating difficult phases of the match: “Knowing that there are going to be difficult moments, but sticking together and coming through those moments as a team, you’ll get your chances. We did that today, which was great.”

The 28-year-old further acknowledged the role of the traveling supporters, describing their backing as crucial: “It was incredible, from the hotel to the stadium. We heard them during the game and in the hotel. Incredible support when we need it.”

Despite the strong first-leg advantage, Lookman insisted the team’s immediate focus remains on their upcoming La Liga fixture against Sevilla on Saturday.

“Saturday first, of course. Then we take it game by game, preparing in the right way with the same positive mindset and attitude,” he added.
