Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has shared his thoughts following Fulham’s goalless draw against Nottingham Forest on Sunday, Bold Sports reports.
The 26-year-old was one of five Nigerian players who featured in the game at the City Ground. While Ola Aina claimed the Premier League Player of the Match award, Bassey only finished behind Kenny Tete for Fulham’s Legend of the Match.
Aside from his impressive defensive performance, the defender had a big chance to score after Alex Iwobi put in a brilliant delivery, finding Bassey whose header was unable to beat goalkeeper Matz Sels in the 20th minute. Reacting to the missed chance, Bassey feels he should have done better.
“It was a big chance. I wasn’t sure if I was on or off. I timed it well, but just hit it straight at the ‘keeper. I think I’ve got to pick a side, I’ve got to do a lot better. I think it’s got to be a goal, in my opinion,” the defender told Premier League Productions.

Bassey praised his teammates for dealing with the difficult conditions during the game. He also gave credit to the defence for their line as two vital offside calls went their way, keeping the score line level.
“Both teams had to deal with the conditions, the pitch, the wind. It was a difficult game, I feel like we grew into it, we tried to manage the situations as best we could, we knew that we had to cover each other, because anything could happen,” he said.
“Great line! Of course, we always try to keep a good line and we managed to do that. Obviously, there’s a bit of luck as well, it was marginal, by a boot or something, but that’s what VAR’s for,” he added.
The result saw Fulham miss out on a chance of climbing into the top ten, affecting their hopes of reaching the European qualification spots. Bassey however believes qualifying for Europe is still possible.
“I don’t think it’s ruled out. We take each game as it comes, anything can happen. I haven’t had a chance to look at the table and see where the other teams are at,” he said.
“The most important thing was that we didn’t lose this game, and we didn’t lose the game. We just take each game as it comes, and hopefully things will work in our favour as well,” the defender concluded.
