Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka made a winning debut for Coventry City on Monday night, featuring for 75 minutes in a crucial 3-1 victory over Middlesbrough at the CBS Arena to send the Sky Blues back to the top of the Championship table.
The Nigerian international, who joined the club on loan from Brentford during the January transfer window, was handed his first appearance by head coach Frank Lampard. His inclusion proved timely as Coventry ended a three-game winless run in front of their home supporters.
Coventry took the lead in the 21st minute through striker Haji Wright, giving the hosts a slender advantage. Six minutes later, Onyeka went into the referee’s book for a challenge in midfield, but the booking did little to disrupt his composure as he continued to shield the backline.

The Sky Blues doubled their lead 10 minutes into the second half when Wright struck again in the 55th minute, finishing confidently to put Coventry firmly in control. However, Middlesbrough responded in the 67th minute as Riley McGree found the net to reduce the deficit and set up a tense finale.
Any hopes of a comeback were swiftly extinguished as three minutes later, Matt Targett handled the ball inside the penalty area, gifting Coventry a spot kick. Wright stepped up and calmly drilled his effort into the bottom corner to complete his hat-trick and restore the two-goal cushion.
Onyeka was withdrawn after 75 minutes to a standing ovation, having delivered a disciplined and energetic display in the heart of midfield on his debut. The 28-year-old was the most fouled player in the match (5).

The victory lifts Coventry back to first place in the Championship standings with 62 points, one clear of Middlesbrough, who slip to second following the defeat.
Coventry will look to build on the momentum when they travel to face West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, while Middlesbrough return home seeking a response against Oxford United.
