Coventry City have confirmed the signing of Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka from Premier League side Brentford, Bold Sports reports.

As announced by the club in an official statement released on Monday evening, Onyeka joins the Sky Blues on loan, with an obligation to buy should Coventry secure promotion to the Premier League.

The 28-year-old arrives at the CBS Arena from Brentford where he plied his trade since the summer of 2021, making 87 appearances across all competitions, including 75 outings in the Premier League.

During his time with the Bees, Onyeka played a key role in helping Brentford cement their status in the top flight and was part of the squad that recorded a ninth-place finish in the 2022-23 season, the club’s highest position in the Premier League era.

Before his move to England, Onyeka played in Denmark with Midtjylland. His spell with the club proved highly successful, as he helped Midtjylland win two Danish Superliga titles, the 2018-19 Danish Cup, and gained valuable European experience featuring in both the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.

Last season, Onyeka continued to build his experience at the top level with a loan move to Bundesliga side Augsburg, where he made 31 appearances in Germany’s top division.

On the international stage, the midfielder has earned 41 caps for Nigeria and recently featured for the Super Eagles at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, where the team finished third.

Onyeka is now set for a fresh challenge as Coventry push for promotion, and he expressed his excitement after completing the move.

“I’m very happy to be here,” Onyeka said. “I’m a strong midfielder, I’m a winner and I always want to fight for my teammates. My aim is to give 100 per cent, bring my experience and help the team get promoted to the Premier League and bring glory to the city again. I’m very excited to get going and I’m ready to give my all for Coventry.”

Onyeka will work under Premier League legend Frank Lampard, a move that could help him improve as a midfielder. Lampard joined the club as the head coach in November 2024 and since then has recorded 35 wins in 66 matches.
