…’We should have taken our chances’ – Iwobi

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi believes Fulham’s 3–0 Premier League defeat to Manchester City in their midweek clash stemmed from showing the Citizens too much respect in the first half.

City raced into a commanding lead with three goals in 16 minutes before the break, courtesy of Antoine Semenyo, Nico O’Reilly, and Erling Haaland. Although they failed to add to their tally in the second half, the early blitz proved enough to secure all three points and move them within four points of league leaders Arsenal.

After a subdued opening period, Fulham improved significantly after the interval, registering nine shots compared to City’s one in the second half. However, they were unable to convert their chances or seriously trouble Pep Guardiola’s side.

Speaking in his YouTube vlog after the match, Iwobi admitted the team could have approached the first half with greater intensity, particularly in terms of pressing and taking their opportunities.

“Another game of two halves. In the second half, we did ourselves justice and did well, but that first half,” Iwobi said.

“We can say we showed Man City too much respect in the first half. We didn’t press enough, including myself – obviously it’s a team thing.”

Iwobi also lamented Fulham’s lack of cutting edge in front of goal during the opening period.

“We were too passive in the first half. We had a few chances as well, but when you’re playing against world-class players, you have to take your chances and we didn’t, especially in that first half. We didn’t impose ourselves as much as we should have.

“We’ve already spoken among ourselves. We can’t dwell on that now,” the Nigeria international added.
