Hamburger SV have reached a full agreement with Swiss champions Basel to sign Nigerian forward Philip Otele, with the Bundesliga side set to bolster their attacking options for the second half of the season, Bold Sports reports.
According to Sky Sports reporters Florian Plettenberg and Patrick Berger, all parties have agreed on a loan move that includes an option to buy. The 26-year-old is scheduled to undergo his medical on Sunday, after which the deal is expected to be officially announced.
Hamburger will be pleased to get the transfer over the line, having faced strong competition for Otele’s signature in recent months. The Nigerian forward has been heavily linked with several clubs across Europe, including Premier League sides Wolves and Fulham as well as Scottish champions Celtic and Serie A outfit Lazio, underlining the growing reputation he has built in Switzerland.

Otele joined Basel in January 2025 and quickly established himself as one of the club’s standout performers. In his first six months, he delivered an impressive return of nine goals and four assists in 21 appearances, making an immediate impact in the Swiss Super League.
He has carried that form into the current campaign, scoring nine goals and providing four assists in 32 games across all competitions. His ability to operate across the forward line, combined with his consistent end product, has made him one of the most sought-after Nigerian attackers on the European market.
If the move is completed as expected, Otele will become the latest Nigerian to secure a Bundesliga switch in recent weeks. Earlier this month, RB Leipzig completed the signing of Flying Eagles winger Suleiman Sani, while Augsburg have also agreed a deal in principle to sign Nigerian striker Uchenna Ogundu.
For Hamburger, the timing of Otele’s arrival could prove crucial. The club currently sit 13th in the Bundesliga with 19 points, but goalscoring has been a major concern this season, with only the league’s bottom two sides finding the net less often. With Otele expected to add both creativity and finishing quality, HSV will hope the Nigerian forward can provide the spark needed to turn their season around.
