Super Eagles trio Rafael Onyedika, Bruno Onyemaechi and Igho Ogbu headline the list of Nigerian players on the brink of crashing out of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League as Matchday 8 of the group phase takes centre stage across Europe tonight.

The Champions League’s revamped format, introduced last season, features an expanded 36-team league phase.

The top 24 teams progress beyond the group stage, with the top eight qualifying automatically for the Round of 16, while teams placed ninth to 24th contest a two-legged playoff for the remaining slots.

Onyedika’s Club Brugge are currently outside the top 24, sitting 27th on the standings with seven points from seven matches.

The Belgian side welcome Ligue 1 outfit Olympique Marseille to the Jan Breydel Stadium, knowing a victory would take them to 10 points and keep their playoff hopes alive – though they will still need favourable results elsewhere to advance.

In contrast, Igho Ogbu’s Slavia Prague have already been eliminated from the competition. The Czech champions have managed just three points from seven games, recording three draws and four defeats to sit 34th on the table, ahead of only Villarreal and Kairat Almaty.

Ogbu, alongside fellow Nigerians David Moses and Samuel Isife, will therefore miss out on progression.

Several other Nigerian stars also face uncertain fates heading into the final round of fixtures. Bruno Onyemaechi, George Ilenikhena, Nathan Tella and Victor Osimhen all have their clubs battling to either secure playoff spots or avoid elimination.

Onyemaechi’s Olympiacos currently occupy the final playoff position in 24th place with eight points and must secure a positive result away to Ajax Amsterdam, who themselves retain an outside chance of sneaking into the playoffs with a win.

George Ilenikhena’s Monaco sit 21st with nine points and face a stern test at home against Serie A giants Juventus, knowing defeat could see them drop out of the top 24.

Nathan Tella’s Bayer Leverkusen are in a relatively comfortable position in 19th place on nine points and will fancy their chances against Villarreal, who are already eliminated after losing six of their seven matches.

Victor Osimhen’s Galatasaray, meanwhile, need at least a draw away to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium to secure their place in the playoffs. The Turkish champions are 17th on the standings with 10 points, and a share of the spoils would be enough to book their spot in the knockout phase.
