Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi expressed his delight after helping Nottingham Forest claim maximum points, scoring his first Premier League goal in over a year to seal a 2-0 away victory over Brentford on Sunday.

Forest were eager to return to winning ways following their three-game winless streak in all competitions. An FA Cup loss to Wrexham, a hoalldraw against Arsenal and 1-0 loss to Sporting Braga in the Europa League.

Igor Jesus had handed the visitors an early lead in the 12th minute, but Awoniyi wrapped up the win with a brilliant solo effort in the 79th minute, extinguishing any hopes of a Brentford comeback and securing Forest’s second victory of 2026.

Speaking after the match, Awoniyi said the team was delighted with the result, describing it as a much-needed response after a difficult run of form. He also revealed that his goal came from keeping calm in a decisive moment.

“We’re so happy because coming into the game, we needed to win. Getting the three points here with a clean sheet is something positive for the team going forward,” Awoniyi said.

“It’s about doing the basics and being ready to fight for every ball, which is what we did today. We played for each other.

“At 1-0 we were defending and defending. At half-time, we said we needed one more goal. It was a great team effort. One-on-one with the defender, I just took my time in the box and passed it into the net.”

Awoniyi, who last featured in the league for Forest during their 2-0 defeat to Everton on December 30, was introduced in the 68th minute in place of Igor Jesus.

The Nigeria international has endured a challenging spell over the past two seasons, battling issues with form, consistency, and injuries after a bright start following his move from Bundesliga side Union Berlin.

Awoniyi will hope the goal serves as a major confidence boost as he looks to earn more game time and rediscover his best form at the club.
