Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface will play no further part in the current season after Werder Bremen confirmed that the Nigerian International is set to undergo knee surgery, Bold Sports reports.

The 25-year-old has not featured for the Bundesliga side since December 7, with persistent injury problems preventing him from getting consistent game time. Following extensive consultations, all parties have now agreed that surgery represents the best path forward for the striker’s recovery.

Werder Bremen made the announcement on Saturday via their official Instagram page, with the club’s head of professional football, Peter Niemeyer explaining the decision.

“We are happy that we now have a solution to let Victor perform a surgery. There is clarity for all parties,” Niemeyer said. “Due to the rehabilitation process, we no longer assume that Victor will still be available for Werder this season.”

Boniface joined Werder Bremen on loan from Bayer Leverkusen during the summer transfer window, but his time at the club has not gone to plan. He has made just 11 appearances in all competitions, failing to score while registering two assists.

With the loan deal set to expire at the end of the season, it now appears unlikely that Boniface will feature for Werder Bremen again. The focus has instead shifted to his long-term fitness, with surgery expected to give him the best chance of returning to his top level.

Despite a difficult campaign, Boniface’s quality remains undisputed. He enjoyed a remarkable first season in the Bundesliga, scoring 21 goals and providing nine assists in 34 appearances across all competitions, a campaign that ended with a historic league title triumph. He followed that up last season with 11 goals and one assist in 27 games.

As he prepares for surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation, Boniface will be hoping to put his injury struggles behind him and rediscover the form that once made him one of the league’s most feared forwards.
