Nigeria’s Super Eagles will no longer be able to reach the playoff stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, meaning their only route to the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada is by finishing top of Group C.

As things stand, the playoff slots, reserved for the best second-placed teams across all African qualifying groups, are currently occupied by Gabon and Madagascar with 19 points apiece, as well as Burkina Faso and Cameroon who complete the top four with 18 points each.

The Super Eagles, however, sit on 11 points with just two games left to play. This means that even if they secure victories against Lesotho and Benin Republic in their remaining fixtures, they would only reach a maximum of 17 points, insufficient to break into the playoff spots.

Nigeria currently occupy third place in Group C, three points behind leaders Benin Republic and second-placed South Africa. Benin will face Rwanda and Nigeria in their final two matches, while South Africa will take on Zimbabwe and Rwanda.

Meanwhile, Eric Chelle’s men are currently in Polokwane to face Lesotho at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Friday, before returning home to host Benin Republic at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Tuesday, October 14.

The qualification picture remains delicately poised. For Nigeria to qualify, they must win both matches and hope South Africa slip up in at least one of their remaining games. Conversely, Bafana Bafana will need Nigeria to defeat or hold Benin Republic in Uyo to keep their own hopes alive.

With only two matchdays left, Group C is shaping up to deliver a dramatic finale. For the Super Eagles, however, the equation is simple — only maximum points will do if they are to keep their 2026 World Cup dream alive.
