In-form striker Kelechi Iheanacho could be set for a return to the Super Eagles squad ahead of the final round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in October.
The Eagles face Lesotho and Benin on October 10 and 14, respectively, but the fixtures may prove inconsequential as Nigeria’s hopes of securing a ticket to the World Cup appear to have all but faded.
Head coach Eric Chelle is likely to face some tough selection decisions, with Cyriel Dessers expected to be dropped after his poor showing against South Africa.

Iheanacho, however, seems to have rediscovered his spark since joining up with Brendan Rodgers at Celtic. The pair previously worked together at Leicester City, where the Nigerian forward enjoyed some of his most consistent spells.
Aside from Dessers, Victor Boniface is also unlikely to earn a recall after being left out of the last qualifiers due to poor form, leaving Victor Osimhen and Tolu Arokodare as the only recognized strikers currently in the setup.

Iheanacho’s recent form strengthens his case for a recall. In his last four appearances for Celtic, he has scored twice and registered an assist, showing signs of sharpness and confidence in front of goal.
With Chelle expected to unveil his squad list for the upcoming qualifiers in the coming days, Iheanacho will be strongly tipped for inclusion. Though he has yet to feature for the Super Eagles under Chelle, his resurgence could finally open the door for a long-awaited return to the national team.
