Nigerian sprint sensation Kanyinsola Ajayi capped off a remarkable tournament by finishing 6th in the men’s 100m final at the Tokyo 2025 World Championships, Bold Sports reports.

Ajayi, who clocked 10.00 seconds, had already etched his name into history by becoming the first Nigerian man in 18 years to qualify for the 100m final, following in the footsteps of Olusoji Fasuba’s run in 2007. Though he missed out on the medals, his presence in a stacked final has been hailed as a major achievement in Nigerian athletics.

At just 21, Ajayi’s performance is being seen as a springboard for bigger things, with many believing it is only a matter of time before he challenges for a podium finish on the global stage.

The race itself belonged to Jamaica’s Oblique Seville, who stormed to a 9.77s finish to clinch his first world title, holding off compatriot Kishane Thompson (9.82) and American Noah Lyles (9.89, SB), who settled for silver and bronze.

Meanwhile, Kenneth Bednarek of the USA finished 4th in 9.92, South Africa’s Gift Leotlela was 5th in 9.95, while veteran Akani Simbine placed 7th in 10.04. Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, the reigning World Junior champion, was disqualified for a false start.

Ajayi’s performance, coming on his birthday, has injected renewed optimism into Nigerian sprinting. For a nation starved of global sprinting success in the men’s category, his achievement is being celebrated as a new dawn.
