Rwanda’s national team will land in Lagos on Tuesday afternoon ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying clash with Nigeria at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo, on Saturday.
An advance party from the Amavubi will touch down in Lagos on Monday, while the full delegation is expected on a Rwandair flight scheduled to arrive at 1:15pm on Tuesday. From there, they will connect to Uyo by 4pm to settle into camp for the all-important encounter.
The Matchday 7 tie has grown in importance, with both Nigeria and Rwanda chasing leaders South Africa, who currently sit on 13 points. However, FIFA is still reviewing Bafana Bafana’s use of an ineligible player in their March win over Lesotho, a case that could reshape the group standings.
As it stands, Rwanda are second with eight points, level with Benin Republic, while Nigeria sit fourth on seven points. Lesotho follow closely with six points, and Zimbabwe are bottom on four. If South Africa are docked points, the group could be blown wide open, leaving Saturday’s contest even more decisive.
The Super Eagles defeated Rwanda 2-0 in Kigali in March during Matchday 5. But the Amavubi will draw confidence from their shock 2-1 comeback win in Uyo last year during the final round of AFCON 2025 qualifiers, even though that result was not enough to earn them a ticket to the tournament.
While Rwanda will face Zimbabwe in their Matchday 8 fixture, Nigeria must travel to Bloemfontein to battle South Africa in what could be a group-defining showdown.
Kick-off for Saturday’s match in Uyo is scheduled for 5pm Nigerian time.
