Group winners Nigeria suffered a shocking 2-1 defeat to Rwanda’s Amavubi at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in their final qualifier for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Despite already securing a place in the tournament, the Super Eagles were expected to end their campaign on a high. However, they delivered a lackluster performance, struggling to impose themselves throughout the game.
Samuel Chukwueze, who replaced Kelechi Iheanacho at halftime, provided the lone spark for Nigeria. In the 60th minute, he received a pass from Frank Onyeka, danced past three defenders, and fired a powerful shot past goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari to give the Eagles the lead.
Rwanda, however, capitalised on Nigeria’s defensive lapses. Substitute Marie Gueulette equalised in the 72nd minute, heading home from a free-kick as Nigeria’s defenders failed to react. Moments later, the visitors struck again, taking advantage of a disorganized Super Eagles backline to score the winning goal.
The Eagles had chances but failed to convert. Victor Boniface, handed another chance to prove himself, struggled to make an impact. He missed two key opportunities, including a 68th-minute effort set up by Chukwueze and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.
Rwanda’s victory was bittersweet as news of Benin’s goalless draw with Libya meant the Amavubi missed out on AFCON qualification. Meanwhile, Nigeria will need to regroup ahead of the tournament in Morocco next year, with concerns over their inconsistent form and defensive vulnerabilities.
