Super Falcons midfielder Deborah Abiodun has been recalled by Washington Spirit after a short but eventful loan spell at Dallas Trinity FC, Bold Sports reports.
The two clubs confirmed Abiodun’s return to Washington Spirit in separate posts on their websites on Tuesday.
Abiodun, who helped Nigeria win the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) last month, joined Dallas shortly after signing a three-year contract with Washington.
Despite the loan initially running through the end of the year, the Spirit moved to bring her back four months early as they prepare for the decisive stretch of the 2025 NWSL season.
At Dallas Trinity, the 21-year-old impressed in midfield, racking up 12 appearances, seven starts, and over 650 minutes of football. She featured in the season opener on August 23, playing the full 90 minutes in Dallas’ 2-1 win over Spokane FC at the historic Cotton Bowl.
Washington Spirit interim general manager Nathan Minion said the club is eager to reintegrate the Nigerian star.
“We’re thrilled to bring Deb back to the Spirit as we approach the home stretch of the 2025 season. After following her impressive performances with Dallas and Nigeria this year, we know Deb will fit very well with this team and help us accomplish our goals.”
Born in Ibadan, Abiodun has steadily built her international pedigree. A University of Pittsburgh alumnus, she first caught global attention at the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, before making Nigeria’s squads for the 2023 Women’s World Cup and the 2024 Paris Olympics. She crowned her rise with a standout role in Nigeria’s WAFCON-winning campaign this year.
Her early recall means Dallas Trinity will continue the season without one of their brightest players, as they look ahead to a clash against Brooklyn FC on August 30.
Meanwhile, Abiodun could make her Spirit return on August 31 at Audi Field, when Washington host Chicago Stars FC in their annual Pride Match.
