The 5th edition of the Dreams Basketball Tournament tipped off in electrifying fashion on Thursday at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, Liberty Road, Ibadan, delivering dominant wins, nail-biting finishes, and a glimpse of the high-level competition expected throughout the competition.
In Group B, Hoops & Read opened their campaign with authority, cruising past Vision Sports 64–47. From the opening tip, they controlled the tempo and outclassed their opponent, making a strong statement of intent for the rest of the tournament.
The drama peaked in Group A as Showtyme battled past Deep Bond in a thrilling 88–86 overtime victory. Both sides went toe-to-toe, but Showtyme’s composure in crunch time proved decisive in one of the tournament’s early classics.
Elsewhere, Ebun Comets edged the University of Ibadan 52–51 in a tense showdown decided by a single point. The Comets held their nerve in the dying seconds to claim an important Group B win.

The day’s action closed with another tight finish as Rising Star narrowly defeated Kwara Falcons 54–53 in a fiercely contested encounter, sealing their quarterfinal ticket in dramatic style.
With the opening-day drama settled, attention now turns to the quarterfinal stage, which kicks off on Friday, August 22. The first game will see Hoops & Read face the University of Ibadan, followed by an exciting clash between Rising Star and Deep Bond.
Later in the day, Ebun Comets will go up against Vision Sports, while the final matchup pits Showtyme against Kwara Falcons in what promises to be a high-energy battle to close out the day.
