Rivers United head coach Finidi George is optimistic his side can spring a surprise against defending champions Remo Stars when both teams clash in the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League season opener at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta.
The highly anticipated curtain-raiser pits two of last season’s top teams against each other in the battle for the first points of the new campaign. While Remo Stars aim to retain the title they lifted last season, Rivers United are determined to reclaim their place at the summit of the NPFL.
With renovation works still ongoing at their Ikenne home ground, the Sky Blue Stars have adopted Abeokuta’s MKO Abiola Stadium as their temporary base for their opening fixtures. Finidi believes this neutral setting could work in his team’s favor.
“We’re playing the reigning champions, so it will be a tough game. But since they’re also away from home, we’ll look to capitalize on that and hopefully pull off a surprise victory,” Finidi said.

Remo Stars may face additional challenges heading into the match, as several key players and head coach Daniel Ogunmodede only recently returned from Tanzania, where they represented Nigeria in the 2024 African Nations Championship. The team exited the tournament at the group stage.
