Nigeria’s D’Tigress will look to build on their dominant start at the ongoing 2025 Women’s Afrobasket as they face Mozambique in their final Group D game later today.

The reigning champions decisively began their title defense, cruising to a 92-45 victory over Rwanda, an early statement that underlined their intent. It was a complete team effort, with Elizabeth Balogun, Amy Okonkwo, Ifunanya Okoro, Murjanatu Musa, and Victoria Macaulay all scoring in double figures.

Their opponents, Mozambique, will enter the contest with confidence and momentum, having secured a 72-55 win over Rwanda in their tournament opener.

That victory guaranteed them a place in the knockout stages, but a win against Nigeria would not only be a massive upset, it would also see them top the group.

Mozambique head coach Carlos Aik acknowledged the challenge ahead but believes his team can rise to the occasion.

“Winning our first game is important because we know we have Nigeria in the group, and they haven’t lost in their last 25 games on the continent.

“We beat Rwanda, but that’s not enough. We have to face Nigeria next and other games,” Aik said. “The game against Nigeria won’t be easy, but we will prepare for it.”

D’Tigress’ head coach Rena Wakama also urged her players to maintain their focus and quickly turn their attention to Mozambique following the win over Rwanda.

“Girls, the game against Rwanda is over,” she said in the locker room. “Our focus is now on Mozambique. Let’s prepare for that and execute.”
