Former Super Eagles striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni made a beautiful return to Merseyside on Saturday, as he watched his former club Everton cruise to a commanding 3-0 victory over Chelsea at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Yakubu, fondly remembered by Everton supporters for his goal-scoring exploits, was given a rousing reception outside the ground. Fans gathered in large numbers to welcome the 43-year-old, chanting his iconic song, “Feed the Yak and he’ll score,” in tribute to his time at the club.

During his Everton career, the Nigerian forward netted 33 goals and recorded 12 assists in 107 appearances, cementing his place as a fan favourite.

Also in attendance was World Cup winner and former Italy international Marco Materazzi, adding further star power to the occasion as David Moyes’ side aimed to secure consecutive wins at their new home ground.

On the pitch, Everton delivered an impressive performance in front of their supporters. Beto opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, showing great composure to finish past goalkeeper Robert Sánchez after being played through on goal by James Garner.

The hosts doubled their lead in the 62nd minute, with Beto grabbing his second of the night. The striker fired a low effort through the legs of Sánchez, who was having a disappointing outing in goal, to make it 2-0.

Beto continued his man of the match performance by turning provider in the 76th minute, producing a clever flick that set up Iliman Ndiaye, who cut inside before unleashing a powerful strike into the top corner to seal a comprehensive 3-0 victory.

The result lifts Everton to eighth place on the table with 46 points, moving them within two points of sixth-placed Chelsea, whose hopes of securing a UEFA Champions League spot continue to fade.

Chelsea will look to bounce back in their next league outing against title contenders Manchester City, while Everton travel to face Brentford. Both games will come up after the March International break.
