…Eguavoen confirms he’ll be in charge for all AFCON qualifiers
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will not hire a permanent coach for the Super Eagles until 2025, leaving interim coach Austin Eguavoen in charge through the remainder of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, Bold Sports reports.
Eguavoen will continue to manage the team for upcoming qualifiers, including a doubleheader against Libya this month and final matches against Benin and Rwanda in November.

In an interview with Brila FM, he confirmed his role, stating, “I have been told I will be in charge for the qualifiers against Libya home and away, as well as Benin (away) and Rwanda (home).”
The Super Eagles have been without a permanent coach since Finidi George resigned following two disappointing results in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, which has slightly jeopardized the team’s chances of qualifying for the tournament.
Eguavoen took over as interim coach and has already managed the first two AFCON qualifiers. His leadership will continue until the conclusion of the AFCON qualifying campaign.
The next significant challenge for the Super Eagles will come in March 2025, when they resume their World Cup qualifying campaign against Rwanda and Zimbabwe. The NFF is expected to appoint a permanent coach before then, with names such as Hervé Renard and German coach Bruno Labbadia reportedly under consideration.
Eguavoen has indicated that while he is open to the permanent role, it is a decision that requires careful thought.
“If I need to become the Super Eagles coach permanently, it is something I need to sit down and reflect on before making a decision because it is not a small job,” he said.
