D’Tigers and Girona Basquet guard, Ike Iroegbu, has revealed that he chose basketball over football at a young age due to his mother’s influence.

Born in the United States to Nigerian parents, Iroegbu shared that while his first love was soccer (football), a pivotal moment came when their mother asked each child to pick a sport to focus on.

“I started with soccer—playing in the backyard when I was about five,” Ike Iroegbu said in an interview on Girona’s official YouTube page. “But my mum made us each pick a corner of the house and choose a sport. We all ended up picking basketball.”

From that early decision, Ike Iroegbu began honing his craft. He played basketball throughout high school and college but went undrafted in the 2017 NBA Draft. Despite the setback, he built a solid professional career across Europe, representing clubs in Germany, Lithuania, France, Israel, Italy, and Spain, as well as featuring in the NBA G League in the United States.

Recalling his first organized game, he said, “The first time I played competitively was at a Salvation Army camp when I was nine. I was nervous, but it was fun. I did well, though my older brother was really good too.”

Iroegbu also expressed deep gratitude to his parents for their unwavering support throughout his journey.

“My parents guided me through everything. Anytime I faced a challenge or had to make a tough decision, they gave me the best advice. They always pushed me to be the best version of myself, on and off the court. I honestly have the best parents in the world.”
