Werder Bremen sporting director Clemens Fritz has acknowledged that the club’s attacking recruitment has not delivered as expected, with Victor Boniface emerging as a key example following his loan move.‎‎

Boniface arrived with high expectations, as Werder looked to strengthen their frontline with a mix of proven quality and youth development. The Nigerian striker was expected to provide a physical presence in attack while complementing emerging talents within the squad. However, those plans have been significantly disrupted by ongoing fitness issues.‎‎

The forward has struggled to reach full match sharpness, having reportedly arrived short of full fitness and later dealing with further injury setbacks. As a result, his involvement has been limited, with most of his appearances coming from the bench. Boniface has made 11 Bundesliga appearances this season, registering 0 goals and 2 assists in those games.‎‎

Fritz later addressed the situation directly, admitting that the club’s intentions did not translate into results:‎

“We said we wanted to be bold. We wanted to rely on young players. And certainly not everything went according to plan. We can’t absolve ourselves of making mistakes.”

“On the one hand, we wanted to develop Keke, and on the other hand, we also wanted to acquire the quality that Victor undoubtedly possesses. As things stand now, we have to say that it hasn’t worked out in that form.‎‎“

“We wanted to take a manageable financial risk and have the courage to see the opportunity.”‎‎

The Werder chief’s comments underline the gap between planning and execution, particularly in the club’s attacking setup. Boniface was central to their strategy, but his lack of availability has left the team without the reliable option they had anticipated.

‎‎With the striker now unlikely to play a major role for the remainder of the season, his loan spell reflects a broader issue in Werder Bremen’s recruitment approach — where ambition has been undermined by fitness concerns and limited on-pitch impact.
