Former Rwanda head coach Stephen Constantine believes the East African nation has what it takes to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, warning that it would be dangerous if the Super Eagles underestimates the Amavubi.
The Englishman, who managed Rwanda between 2014 and 2015 and currently coaches Pakistan’s national football team, urged Rwandans to take their football seriously and recognize the talent within their squad. He also cautioned opponents against underestimating Rwanda’s strength.
Rwanda has made an impressive start to their World Cup qualifying campaign, topping Group C on goal difference with seven points from their first four matches. Their next challenge will be a crucial clash against the Super Eagles of Nigeria on March 21.
The Amavubi have already stunned South Africa with a 2-0 victory in Huye and secured a 1-0 win against Lesotho in Durban. They also registered a draw against Zimbabwe and suffered a narrow defeat to Benin.

Notably, Rwanda remains unbeaten against Nigeria in their last two encounters, having played to a draw at the Amahoro Stadium before securing a 2-1 victory in Uyo during last year’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Speaking with German-based media outlet DW, Constantine emphasized that Nigeria must not underestimate Rwanda, highlighting their determination and potential.
“It’s not about size or population, but what you do with what you have—and Rwanda does that well,” Constantine told DW ahead of Friday’s clash against Nigeria.
“I think Rwanda is largely underestimated, but there is a lot of talent in the squad. That is what happens when players are given time and opportunities to develop,” he added.
