Tobi Amusan continued her progression into the season as she won the 100m hurdles at the Jamaica Athletics Invitational on Saturday.
Amusan crossed the line in a world-leading time of 12.40s ahead of World champion and home athlete, Danielle Williams in 12.46s with American Christina Clemons third in 12.56s.
The packed field which also had 2019 World Champion, Nia Ali, saw Amusan having a bad start, not catching up with leading pack until the seventh hurdle.
But once she had caught up, the world record holder was unstoppable, crossing the line first, while Ali could only settle for fifth in 12.65s behind Jamaica’s Yanique Thompson who was fourth in 12.59s.
The victory was a relief for Amusan, who was disqualified in her last race at the Suzhou Diamond League for a false start. She went on to run that race under protest and crossed the finish line first, but the result didn’t count.
“This is the healthiest I’ve been. It’s a pain-free season compared to other years,” Amusan said.
“I told myself: ‘I’m not getting a DQ today’. I’m not the best of starters, but looking at how I executed today, it could have been better, but I am thankful for the win.”
