Nigeria’s para powerlifting star Folashade Oluwafemiayo has once again proven her dominance on the global stage, breaking her own world record to win gold in the women’s over 86kg category at the World Para Powerlifting Championships in Cairo, Egypt.

Oluwafemiayo lifted an incredible 168kg to surpass her previous world record of 167kg, set just a year ago in Paris. The monumental effort has earned her a fourth world title and further cemented her place among the greatest para powerlifters in history.

This latest triumph also adds to a glittering career that includes two Paralympic gold medals and multiple world records.

Oluwafemiayo’s journey to greatness has been one of resilience and redemption. She took up para powerlifting in 2010 and announced herself on the world stage with a silver medal at the London 2012 Paralympics, all while pregnant.

Her progress was briefly halted in 2013 when she was suspended for two years after testing positive for a banned substance. She later returned, though she had to take another break due to pregnancy before the Rio 2016 Games.

The Nigerian made a stunning comeback at the Mexico City 2017 World Championships, winning gold with a world record lift. She successfully defended her title two years later at Nur-Sultan 2019.

At the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, Oluwafemiayo finally achieved her long-awaited dream of Paralympic gold, lifting 151kg to finish well ahead of her rivals. She followed that up with victories at the Tbilisi 2021 World Championships and the Cairo 2022 African Open Championships.

A setback came in Dubai 2023, where she settled for bronze after lifting 152kg. But that disappointment only spurred her on. Moving up to the women’s over 86kg category, she struck gold again in Paris 2024 with a new world record of 167kg.

Now, in Cairo, she has gone one better, lifting 168kg to set yet another world record and reaffirm her place at the pinnacle of para powerlifting.
