Nigeria international Moses Simon opened his goal account for the season to propel Nantes to a much-needed 2-0 win over newly-promoted Auxerre in the French Ligue 1 on Sunday.
Simon’s strike, which came in the 14th minute, provided Nantes with an early advantage. The game was sealed in the 96th minute when substitute Bahereba Guirassy netted his first senior goal for the club.
Auxerre’s day took a significant turn for the worse when Ado Onaiwu, a Japanese striker with Nigerian roots, was sent off in the 53rd minute for a dangerous tackle on Douglas Augusto.
Manager Antoine Kombouaré heaped praise on Simon’s performance, highlighting his importance to the team and his status as one of Nantes’ most feared players.
“Finally! What a relief! We suffered so much, we made our supporters suffer so much. No matter how, we needed this victory. Today, we have to savour it. And then get back to work! It does us so much good,” Kombouaré said after the game.
“We know the importance of Moses in the club and the team. The opponent fears him and can free up space for his friends. If he finds his efficiency again, it’s all good for the team. He’s still suffering, but with a victory!
“I’m approaching this last week of the transfer window calmly. There are no players who stay there by default. They are very happy to be here.”
