Esther Okoronkwo says Nigeria’s comeback victory over Morocco in the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final was a result of grit, strategy, and belief.
The forward played a key role in the Super Falcons’ 3–2 win in Rabat, scoring from the penalty spot and providing two crucial assists as Nigeria overturned a 2–0 deficit to claim a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
Speaking after the match, Okoronkwo revealed the team knew they had to approach the second half with a different mindset.
“We knew we had to come up [with a] different strategy. We knew we needed to fight,” she said.
“We talked over it in the locker room [and said] we have to change the way we are playing. It just shows resilience in us.”
The Falcons went into the tournament with the theme “Mission X” — a nod to their pursuit of a 10th title — and Okoronkwo’s performance was key in making that mission a success. She finished the competition with two goals and six assists.
The 28-year-old’s composure and creativity in the final third helped turn the tide for Nigeria, who have now won every WAFCON final they’ve played in.
