Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi says the disappointment of missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup will serve as fuel for the team to strive for greater achievements in the future.
Nigeria failed to secure Africa’s sole ticket to the FIFA Inter-confederation World Cup Qualifying Play-off Tournament after losing 4–3 on penalties to DR Congo in the final of the African play-offs on Sunday at the Complexe Sportif Prince Moulay Abdellah.
The Super Eagles delivered a performance to forget, as their Central African opponents completely outplayed them over the course of 120 minutes.
The result means Nigeria will miss the World Cup for the second consecutive time, having also failed to qualify for the 2022 edition in Qatar.

In a heartfelt message shared on Snapchat, the Fulham midfielder expressed his sadness over the setback but stressed that the experience would only strengthen the team’s resolve moving forward.
“You win some, you lose some. Not every dream becomes a reality,” Iwobi wrote. “Life doesn’t stop. We must use this experience to strive and push on to be better. Proud of my brothers.”
Up next for the Super Eagles is the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. After finishing as runners-up in the last edition in Ivory Coast, the team will be determined to go one step further and bring home the trophy.
