Nigeria’s Reuben Chinyelu enters NCAA transfer portal

After one season, freshman Reuben Chinyelu has penned an emotional farewell message to Washington State University Cougars having decided to enter the NCAA transfer portal.

Reuben Chinyelu on Friday announced that he’d be looking for his next opportunity elsewhere after one season with the Washington Cougars.

After speaking with the coaching staff and teammates, the former NBA Africa Academy player announced his intention to enter the transfer portal on social media.

“I humbly express my deepest gratitude to the almighty for his unwavering love and guidance in my life. His presence has been my strength, and his grace has sustained me throughout my journey,” Reuben Chinyelu, the former Nigeria U-16 star wrote.

“I extend my sincere appreciation to the coaching staff, academic advisor, athletic trainer, and strength and conditioning coach of the WS men’s basketball program for their invaluable support and guidance. Your dedication has significantly contributed to my growth, both as a player and a person.

“To my teammates, I am extremely thankful for the beautiful memories we’ve shared. You all have a special place in my heart, I will forever cherish every ounce of the time we shared. 

“A special shoutout to the Pullman Community for making this season truly remarkable. Your kindness and hospitality have created an environment where anyone can thrive. I am deeply grateful for your unwavering support.”

Although top NCAA colleges will be on the lookout for a big with the qualities of Chinyelu, it is still unknown if he will eventually declare for the 2024 NBA draft.

Chinyelu made history by becoming the all-time blocks leader in WSU freshman history with a total of 40 blocks as of March 1. The 20-year-old averaged 4.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game in the NCAA.

He is also the top shot-blocking freshman in Pac-12.
