Nigeria swept the men’s and women’s 4x100m relay at the ongoing 13th African Games, winning the gold medal in both events Wednesday evening.
The Nigerian team broke the hearts of home fans, winning gold medals in both events to lead a Nigeria, Ghana and Liberia relay podium.
In the women’s 4x100m, Tobi Amusan – who had earlier won her third straight 100m hurdles gold – came back to anchor the team to victory.
The quarter which also had Justina Eyakpobeyan, Olayinka Olajide and Fore Abinusawa sealed a commanding win in 43.05s, almost a second more than second-placed Liberia in 44.02s, while host Ghana won the bronze medal in 44.02s.
In the men’s race, the Nigerians also avenged the loss suffered in the hands of Ghana four years ago, claiming a victory over their rivals in their backyard.
Usheoritse Itsekiri, the only surviving member of the silver-winning quartet in Rabat, anchored Nigeria to victory on the finish line in 38.41s after Alaba Akintola had run a spectacular third leg. The relay quarter also had Israel Okon and Consider Ekanem.
Ghana won the silver medal in 38.43s, edging Liberia who ran a National Record time of 38.73s to third place.
