The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is in discussions with several prominent Nigerian companies to secure funds for hiring a foreign coach for the Super Eagles.
NFF President Ibrahim Gusau disclosed at the National Assembly on Wednesday during the Federation’s budget defense.
“We are currently in discussion with Dangote Group, BUA, MTN, Baba Ijebu, and others on the payment of foreign coach,” Gusau said, outlining the Federation’s efforts to address the financial challenges associated with hiring a high-caliber foreign coach.
While acknowledging the work of Austin Eguavoen, the interim Super Eagles coach, Gusau noted the need for financial stability to engage a permanent foreign coach.
“Though, Eguavoen is doing well, but if we must engage a coach, we must make sure that the issue of payment is sorted,” he added.
The NFF president also highlighted previous financial difficulties faced by the organisation in paying former coaches, including an 18-month salary backlog for Jose Peseiro, which the current administration under President Tinubu cleared earlier this year.
“Until last February, the Federal Government did not pay the salary of our former coaches leading to 18-month debt of Jose Peseiro before President Tinubu led government cleared the debt,” Gusau said.
