Hosts Morocco continue their Africa Cup of Nations campaign today with a Round of 16 meeting against Tanzania at the Complexe Sportif Prince Moulay Abdellah Bold Sports reports.

The Atlas Lions carry both home advantage and history into a tie that represents uncharted territory for Tanzania, who are making their first appearance in the AFCON knockout rounds.

It will be only the second meeting between the sides at the finals. Morocco ran out 3–0 winners when they met in the group stage of the 2023 tournament, a result that helped the North Africans top their group while Tanzania exited bottom.

Overall, Morocco have dominated the fixture. They have won seven of the eight meetings between the teams in all competitions, scoring in every match and keeping all five clean sheets recorded in the rivalry. Tanzania have failed to find the net in their last four encounters with the Atlas Lions.

Tanzania’s sole victory came more than a decade ago, a memorable 3–1 home win in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Dar es Salaam, inspired by goals from Thomas Ulimwengu and Mbwana Samatta. Morocco responded with a 2–1 win in the return leg, though neither side reached the finals in Brazil.

Tanzania holds Tunisia

Recent meetings have followed a familiar pattern. Morocco defeated Tanzania home and away in qualifying for the 2012 AFCON and again in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, winning 2–0 in Dar es Salaam in 2023 and repeating the scoreline in Oujda in March 2025. They also edged Tanzania 1–0 in the quarter-finals of the 2024 African Nations Championship, on their way to lifting the title.

This will be Tanzania’s second AFCON match against a host nation, after a 3–1 defeat to Nigeria in Lagos at the 1980 finals. It is also their fifth meeting with North African opposition at the tournament, having lost to Egypt, Algeria and Morocco in previous editions before earning a draw against Tunisia at the current competition.

For Morocco, expectation comes with the territory. Playing at home and boasting a formidable record against their East African opponents, they will be strong favourites to reach the quarter-finals. Tanzania, by contrast, arrive as underdogs, but with the chance to write a new chapter in their AFCON story.
