Maduka Okoye in action for Nigeria

A fresh injury setback has forced Maduka Okoye to cut short his stay with the Super Eagles, bringing an early end to his involvement in the ongoing invitational tournament in Turkey.‎‎

The Udinese goalkeeper picked up a thigh problem during a training session, an issue later confirmed by the team’s official media channel. The knock has ruled him out of Nigeria’s next fixture against Jordan, prompting his immediate return to Italy where he is expected to begin recovery and further assessment.

‎‎His withdrawal comes at a time when he was gradually reintegrating into the national team. Okoye had only recently made his return to the squad and was handed minutes in the 2-1 win over Iran, a match that signaled his comeback after missing out on earlier selections, including the squad that finished third at the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year.‎‎

Although there had been indications that he might be rested for the upcoming game as part of squad rotation, the injury has now made that decision definitive, removing him completely from contention for the remainder of the tournament.

‎‎With Okoye’s absence confirmed, the spotlight now shifts firmly to the goalkeeping department. Adebayo Adeleye and Francis Uzoho are the available options, and both are expected to battle for the starting position as Nigeria prepares to face Jordan in their final game.‎‎

His departure also continues a trend of exits within the squad. Semi Ajayi had earlier left the camp, while Bruno Onyemaechi was excused following the birth of his child, further reducing the team’s depth.‎‎

With multiple changes affecting the squad, Nigeria will now head into their final fixture with a reshaped lineup, as the coaching staff looks to manage the situation and close out the tournament on a strong note.‎
