Nigerian mixed martial artist Kennedy Nzechukwu’s recent return to the heavyweight division wasn’t just a strategic move; it was a health necessity.
“My doctors told me that my frame and the weight cuts were going to hurt me in the long run,” Nzechukwu confessed. “I was vomiting every fight week, especially those last 10 pounds. It was hell.”
The 32-year-old, who had previously competed in the light heavyweight division, found the significant weight cut of 40 pounds too taxing on his body. Despite trying various nutritional strategies, the toll was undeniable.

“I walk around at 245 pounds,” he explained. “Cutting that much weight was unsustainable.”
To prepare for his heavyweight comeback, Nzechukwu sought guidance from new coach Steven Wright of War Room MMA. “I needed to upgrade my skill set,” he said. “Athleticism can only take you so far.”
Under Wright’s tutelage, Nzechukwu embarked on a rigorous strength-training regimen. The results were evident, as he claimed a decisive first-round knockout victory over Chris Barnett at Etihad Arena.
“Coach Steve is a striking nerd,” Nzechukwu praised. “He’s trained with Dutch and Thai fighters, and his experience is invaluable.”
