Super Eagles new invitee Tolu Arokodare has expressed his excitement over his maiden Super Eagles call-up, describing it as a feat that means a lot to him.
Tolu Arokodare is having a standout season in the Belgian Pro League, playing a key role in Genk’s bid for their first league title since 2019. With 17 goals and five assists in 30 league appearances, the 24-year-old has emerged as the top goal contributor in the league.
Arokodare’s outstanding performances caught the attention of coach Eric Chelle, who initially included him in a 39-man provisional squad, before ultimately selecting him for the final 23-man squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
Upon arriving in Kigali, Arokodare shared his thoughts on his maiden Super Eagles call-up: “I was very honored to be mentioned among the 39-man squad. It was surprising, I knew it was coming because I’ve been doing pretty well and I was hoping it would come, and it did come.”
Arokodare further expressed his gratitude and excitement: “I felt like a winner already and I had it at the back of my mind that even if I didn’t make the final squad, I had achieved something. Being in the final 23, I just felt really blessed and grateful.”
For Arokodare, representing Nigeria means a chance to achieve his childhood dreams: “It means a lot. It’s one of the best things that can happen to a football player, getting the opportunity to represent your country and to play. As a kid we always watched the national legends play, and finally being in that position to play for my country, it means a lot to me.”
