Former Nigeria international Emmanuel Amuneke has been unveiled as the new coach of Nigeria National League side Heartland FC for the 2024/25 season.
The announcement was made by Imo State governor, Hope Uzodinma, in a ceremony held in Owerri.
Amuneke, a former Barcelona FC forward, began his football career in Nigeria, playing for Concord and Julius Berger FC. This marks his second stint as a manager in the Nigerian league, having previously managed Julius Berger and Ocean Boys.
The 53-year-old coach brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having led Nigeria’s U-17 team to victory in the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup. He also helped Tanzania qualify for the 2019 AFCON and served as Nigeria’s assistant coach in 2024.
Additionally, Amuneke has managed several club sides, including Khartoum NC (Sudan), Makkassa (Egypt), and Zanaco.
Although Heartland FC was relegated to the Nigeria National League at the end of the 2023/24 season, the team has purchased the slot of newly promoted side Beyond Limits, who opted out of competing in the topflight.
According to sources, the prospect of playing in the NPFL next season was a key factor in convincing Amuneke to join the club.
