Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos remained tight-lipped following South Africa’s elimination from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, choosing not to explain the tactical decisions that preceded their Round of 16 defeat to Cameroon.
South Africa bowed out of the tournament after a 2–1 loss to the Indomitable Lions, a result that followed a bold tactical shift by the Belgian coach.
Broos abandoned his usual setup in favour of a 3-4-3 formation and introduced four new faces into the starting line-up, handing tournament debuts to Nkosinathi Sibisi, Samukelo Kabini, Bathusi Aubaas and Relebohile Mofokeng.
The changes, however, failed to deliver the desired outcome, with Cameroon capitalising to end Bafana’s campaign, much to the disappointment of supporters who had hoped for another deep run after the bronze-medal finish at the last AFCON in Ivory Coast.

Asked to clarify his tactical thinking and his decision to make late substitutions while trailing in the match, Broos shut down the discussion.
“First of all I will not give comment on that and secondly it’s not strange that when players are replaced, they are sometimes not happy,” said the veteran tactician.
Despite the setback, Broos insisted that reflection would follow once emotions had settled.
“I think in the next days, weeks, it’s time now to evaluate this AFCON, what we did also two years ago and see what was good and what was not good and try to make it better, we will see,” he added.

“I can make declarations now but you know when you lose a game like this and you’re eliminated from the AFCON – you’re frustrated, you’re sad, you’re disappointed and sometimes you say things that you regret afterwards.
”So, I will not do that but I agree that we have to evaluate our performances here in this AFCON and see what we can make of it”
