Morocco’s Atlas Lions have etched their name in football history, claiming the FIFA U20 World Cup title for the first time after a stunning 2-0 victory over Argentina at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos, Bold Sports reports.
In a final that few expected them to win, the North Africans delivered a performance of tactical discipline, clinical finishing, and unwavering spirit to become only the second African nation to win the tournament following Ghana’s triumph in 2009.
Remarkably, this was also the fourth consecutive edition of the U20 World Cup to produce a new champion, a trend that began in 2017.
Argentina, record six-time winners and overwhelming favourites, were rattled early when Yassir Zabiri was brought down by goalkeeper Santino Barbi after racing through on goal.
Following a lengthy VAR review, the referee awarded a yellow card and a free-kick instead of a penalty, a decision that infuriated the Moroccans. But the frustration quickly turned into jubilation as Zabiri curled the resulting free-kick beautifully into the top corner, giving Morocco a deserved lead.

Diego Placente’s men tried to respond immediately, pushing bodies forward in search of an equalizer. However, Morocco’s compact defending and sharp transitions proved too much to handle.
On a swift counterattack, Ismael Baouf dispossessed his marker and found Othmane Maamma, whose precise cross was volleyed home emphatically by Zabiri for his second of the game, doubling Morocco’s lead before halftime.
Argentina’s attempts to mount a comeback in the second half were thwarted by a resolute Moroccan defence marshalled by goalkeeper Ibrahim Gomis, who remained largely untested despite the South Americans’ possession dominance.
The Atlas Lions eventually held firm to record a historic win, 48 years after their first participation in the tournament’s inaugural edition.

The triumph saw individual accolades pour in for the champions, with Othmane Maamma winning the adidas Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player, while Zabiri claimed the Silver Ball for his brilliance in attack. Argentina’s Santino Barbi, despite being on the losing side, was named Golden Glove winner for his exceptional performances throughout the competition.
