Hosts Morocco will face one of African football’s most decorated sides when they take on Cameroon in the quarter-finals of the AFCON 2025 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat at 8 pm.

The tie brings together two heavyweights of the African game, renewing an AFCON rivalry that has been largely dominated by Cameroon. This will be the fourth meeting between the sides at the AFCON finals, with the Indomitable Lions unbeaten in the previous three encounters, recording two wins and one draw.

Remarkably, it is their first AFCON meeting this century and their first clash at the finals in almost 40 years. Their AFCON history dates back to 1986, when they played out a 1–1 draw in the group stages. Abdelkrim Krimau gave Morocco the lead before a late equaliser from Roger Milla ensured both teams progressed from Group B.

Two years later, Indomitable Lions broke Moroccan hearts on home soil, eliminating the Atlas Lions in the semi-finals of the 1988 tournament. Cyril Makanaky’s 78th-minute strike proved decisive in Casablanca, sending Cameroon through to the final.

The sides met for a third and final time at the AFCON finals in 1992, with Cameroon once again emerging victorious. André Kana-Biyik’s first-half goal secured a 1–0 win in their opening Group B match.

Beyond AFCON, Cameroon enjoyed a long spell of dominance in the fixture, going unbeaten in their first 13 meetings with Morocco between 1981 and 2017. However, momentum has shifted in recent years.

Morocco have won the last two encounters, including a 2–0 victory in AFCON 2019 qualifying in November 2018, inspired by a Hakim Ziyech brace, and a commanding 4–0 win in the semi-finals of the 2020 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Cameroon’s pedigree against tournament hosts adds another layer to the contest. They have faced AFCON hosts on 13 previous occasions, recording six wins, five draws, and just two defeats. Their only losses came in group-stage matches against Sudan in 1970 and South Africa in 1996, and they are unbeaten in their last six matches against host nations.

In knockout football against hosts, Cameroon’s record is even more formidable. They have been eliminated just once in six such ties, the 1986 final against Egypt while recording famous victories over Morocco (1988), Mali (2002), Ghana (2008), Senegal (1992) and Nigeria in the 2000 final.

Defensive solidity has often underpinned that success. Cameroon have kept nine clean sheets in their 13 AFCON meetings with host nations, including their last three in knockout victories over Mali, Ghana and Gabon.

For Morocco, buoyed by home support and recent wins over Cameroon, this quarter-final represents a chance to overturn history. For Cameroon, it is another opportunity to reaffirm their reputation as masters of AFCON’s biggest occasions.
