‎Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has officially confirmed his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a career that spanned nearly two decades across Nigeria and South Africa.

‎The 39-year-old made the announcement during the Toyota Cup launch at Naturena Village, where he revealed that his focus has now shifted to coaching.

‎”I have retired from active football. I have started doing my courses as a coach; I’m only waiting for the opportunity to start working.”

‎Akpeyi remains one of Nigeria’s most recognisable goalkeepers of the last decade. He earned 18 caps for the Super Eagles and played a key role during Nigeria’s campaign at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

‎That tournament proved to be one of the most important periods of his international career. Akpeyi featured regularly as Nigeria secured a third-place finish and claimed the bronze medal in Egypt. He also represented Nigeria at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, although he did not make an appearance during the competition.

‎His international debut came in 2016 during an AFCON qualifier against Egypt. He later competed for the starting position under former coach Gernot Rohr alongside Ikechukwu Ezenwa.

‎Before Stanley Nwabali emerged as Chippa United’s leading Nigerian goalkeeper, Akpeyi established himself as a key figure at the South African club. He spent four years there after leaving Warri Wolves and became one of the team’s most dependable performers.

‎Following his spell at Chippa United, he also played for Kaizer Chiefs, Moroka Swallows and Marumo Gallants. His last club appearance came before his departure from Marumo Gallants last year.

‎Akpeyi has stayed close to football despite stepping away from active competition. Earlier this year, he was seen assisting Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali during training sessions.

‎With coaching courses already underway, the former Nigeria international now hopes to begin the next phase of his football journey from the touchline rather than between the posts.
