Super Eagles interim coach Austin Eguavoen has expressed confidence ahead of Nigeria’s critical AFCON qualifier against Benin, to be held in Ivory Coast. While recognizing the influence of former head coach Gernot Rohr, Eguavoen stressed the team’s strong resolve to secure a win.
Benin aims to take all three points, which would strengthen their qualification hopes, while the Super Eagles only need a draw to advance to the tournament. In their previous meeting, Nigeria defeated Benin 3-0 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, establishing their dominance in the group and maintaining an unbeaten record.
Discussing the upcoming match, Eguavoen acknowledged Rohr’s deep understanding of the team but noted that the Eagles also know his strategies well. He admitted it would be a tough game but emphasized their focus on winning.
“We worked with Gernot Rohr for many years; he was a good coach and knows our strengths and weaknesses. But we also know him and what he can bring. Nigeria isn’t a team to be taken lightly,” Eguavoen stated.
Despite the challenges and familiarity with their former coach, Eguavoen remains optimistic. He highlighted the team’s mental toughness and commitment to securing victory.
“Our mindset is always to win, though it’s easier said than done. We’ll fight for every ball and point. Benin is no pushover, so we’re putting in the hard work to achieve our goals,” he added.
The Super Eagles are determined to capitalize on their strong position in the group and qualify for the upcoming AFCON tournament.
