Top European clubs are gearing up to compete for the signature of talented Nigerian striker Gift Orban during the January transfer window. This comes after Olympique Lyon was provisionally relegated to Ligue 2 due to financial troubles.
Despite sitting fifth in Ligue 1 after 11 matches, Lyon faces the threat of immediate relegation regardless of their league position. The club has also been hit with an indefinite transfer ban, further undermining its ability to contend for top honours.
Orban, along with star players such as Alexander Lacazette, Nicolás Tagliafico, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Rayan Cherki, and Wilfred Zaha, could become available for transfers in January.
Turkish giants Beşiktaş and Fenerbahçe have already expressed interest in Orban, while Lens, who previously backed out of signing him, may renew their pursuit. Premier League clubs are also expected to enter the race for the Nigerian forward.
Since joining Lyon in January 2024 for €14 million from KAA Gent, Orban has struggled to replicate his earlier form, managing just five goals in 21 appearances across all competitions.
Lyon’s financial woes have worsened, with their debt climbing from €458 million to €508 million. However, the club could stave off relegation if they improve their financial position.
A significant factor in their struggles is their wage bill, the second-highest in Ligue 1, despite failing to secure a top-four finish since the 2020/21 season.
