…’ I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time’ – Bryan Mbeumo

Bryan Mbeumo believes his long-awaited Africa Cup of Nations debut has come at the right time, as Cameroon begin their AFCON campaign in Morocco with renewed ambition.

The Indomitable Lions begin their 2025 AFCON journey against Gabon in Agadir on Wednesday.

The Manchester United forward missed the 2023 edition in Côte d’Ivoire due to injury, but is now set to feature at Africa’s biggest football tournament for the first time. Speaking from the Indomitable Lions’ camp in Agadir, Mbeumo admitted the opportunity carries deep personal meaning.

“I’m really excited. I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time, and I’m very happy to be part of the squad here in Morocco,” Mbeumo told CAF Online.

Although already capped at the FIFA World Cup, the 25-year-old stressed that the Africa Cup of Nations occupies a special place in African football culture, particularly within his family.

“It’s a source of pride for all Africans. In my family, we’ve always watched the AFCON, and for them to now see me play in it will be a great honour. It’s a very special competition to take part in,” he added.

Cameroon have been drawn into a challenging Group F alongside Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon and Mozambique, but Mbeumo insists expectation does not translate to pressure, despite the country’s decorated AFCON history.

“For me, there is no pressure. Wherever I have played, I have always wanted to win. Cameroon has a great history at the AFCON with many successes, and we will try to represent the country well,” said the forward, who has six goals in 16 Premier League appearances this season.

The winger also outlined what head coach David Pagou expects from him, both on and off the pitch, as Cameroon look to mount a serious challenge in Morocco.

“Like everyone else, he expects me to make a difference through my voice, my dribbling, and everything I can bring to help the team achieve results. That’s what we are working towards,” he concluded.
