Ashe, Ojeli, Bada lead charge on Day 1 of MTN CHAMPS Continental Relays

It was a thrilling Day 1 at the MTN CHAMPS Continental Relays in Lagos as athletes set the tracks alight at the Yabatech and Unilag Sports Complexes, with Personal Bests falling across multiple events.

Two-time Olympian Emmanuel Ojeli made a bold statement in the men’s 100m, smashing his three-year-old PB with a blistering 10.24s run to win his semifinal heat. Emmanuel Babalola finished a distant second in 10.55s, while Ganiu Hassan clocked 10.63s in third.

Favour Ashe, fresh off his showing at the Niger Delta Sports Festival, ran a wind-aided 10.14s to win his semifinal ahead of ThankGod Igube (10.23s). In another heat, Chidera Ezeakor cruised to a 10.43s win, ahead of Oriyomi Akala (10.56s).

In the women’s 100m, Iyanu Bada continued her fine form, improving on her prelims PB of 11.48s to clock 11.38s in the semifinals. Janet Adesiyan ran 11.88s in the same race, while Favour Odiyeye posted 11.97s.

The junior category also delivered standout performances. In the junior men’s 100m, John Caleb stormed to a PB of 10.38s to lead the semifinal standings. Qudus Akintoye (10.59s) and Abdulrahman Jimoh (10.61s) followed closely.

Lucy Nwankwo of Team MTN posted the fastest time in the junior women’s 100m, clocking a PB of 12.07s. Her teammate Azeezat Muhammed-Raji ran 12.20s, while Ojone Akubo-Adegbe placed third overall in 12.47s.

In the 400m, Samson Nathaniel led the men’s heats with a season’s best of 46.20s. Benjamin Magaji followed with a 48.28s effort to finish second overall.

Among the women, two-time Olympian Patience Okon George opened her season with 53.19s, while Miracle Donald-Uwem smashed her lifetime best with 54.59s to win her heat and finish second overall.
