Semi Ajayi has warned that Hull City A.F.C. must maintain full focus when they face Sheffield Wednesday F.C., insisting that league position means little in the EFL Championship.
The Nigerian defender is targeting a strong response from the Tigers following their disappointing 3–0 defeat to West Bromwich Albion F.C., a result he believes exposed areas the team must quickly improve.
Having recently returned from injury, Ajayi has already featured prominently, starting matches against Millwall F.C. and West Brom, and completing the full 90 minutes in the latter as he continues to rebuild match sharpness.
Despite Sheffield Wednesday’s struggles near the bottom of the table, Ajayi made it clear that Hull cannot afford complacency.
“One hundred percent, there are no easy games in the Champ. We have to be on it. We can’t drop our levels just because of where they are in the table, because if you do that in this league, you’ll get punished.”
Hull welcome the Owls to the MKM Stadium this weekend in their final fixture before the international break, with valuable points at stake as they push for a place in the end-of-season play-offs.
Ajayi expects a difficult encounter and stressed the importance of matching their opponents’ intensity from the start.

“We have to be at the top of our game. We’ll make sure we are. I’m expecting a tough game from them. We’ll be on it, and we’ll be ready for what they have to bring.”
The 32-year-old also pointed to the unpredictable nature of the Championship, where consistency and quick recovery from setbacks are crucial, especially with only a handful of matches remaining in the campaign.
“You can’t win every game, you’re going to have ups and downs. This wasn’t our day, but we have to bounce back and make sure that it is our day next week.”
With a full week on the training ground after a busy run of fixtures, Ajayi believes Hull have the opportunity to correct their mistakes and return stronger.
“We’ll have a full week of training to put anything right that wasn’t right, and then we have to bounce back strong.”
As the Tigers enter the final stretch of the season, Ajayi emphasised the need to stay focused on immediate tasks rather than looking too far ahead.
“We’re just taking it one game at a time. Our full focus is on Sheffield Wednesday and making sure we put things right and being at our maximum.”
With eight matches left to shape their campaign, Hull City will be aiming to respond positively — and Ajayi is expected to play a key role as they look to reignite their push for promotion.
