…Motsepe announces AFCON winning purse from $7m to $10m
Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe has announced that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will transition from its current biennial format to a quadrennial event, starting from 2028, according to Bold Sports.
Motsepe announced on Saturday during a press conference held in Morocco on the eve of the 2025 AFCON. The CAF president also unveiled plans for the introduction of an African Nations League, modelled after its European counterpart.
According to Motsepe, per ESPN, the African Nations League will be played during FIFA international windows in September and October, with the finals scheduled for the November window each year.

In addition, the CAF president confirmed a significant increase in the prize money for the 2025 AFCON, with the tournament winner set to receive $10 million. This represents a notable rise from the $7 million earned by hosts Ivory Coast for winning the 2023 edition on home soil.
The frequency and timing of the AFCON have long been a subject of debate within the global football community. Traditionally held in January, the tournament often clashes with the European club season, a period when clubs heavily rely on their top African players.

Over the years, this scheduling conflict has led to instances where clubs prevented players from honouring AFCON call-ups, while some players have declined invitations in a bid to secure their places at club level, avoid relegation battles, or establish themselves within their teams.
