Heartbreak: Rivers Hoopers lose BAL semifinal to Al Ahly Libya in overtime

Rivers Hoopers’ bid to become the first Nigerian team to reach the final of the Basketball Africa League ended in a thrilling 89-83 semifinal defeat to Al Ahly Libya at the BK Arena in Kigali.

Al Ahly Libya controlled the first half, taking the first quarter 27-21 and the second 21-16, to lead 48-37 at halftime. However, Rivers Hoopers mounted a remarkable comeback in the third quarter, outscoring their opponents 23-8 to erase the points deficit.

The game ended 73-73 at the end of regulation, with Al Ahly Libya outscoring Rivers Hoopers 17-13 in the fourth quarter to force overtime. The Libyans continued their momentum, outscoring the Hoopers 16-10 in overtime to win the game and advance to the final in their debut tournament appearance.

Kelvin Amayo led Rivers Hoopers with a double-double of 26 points, a game-high 15 rebounds, and 6 assists, while Devine Eke added 25 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 assists. Despite foul trouble, Guard Will Perry contributed 16 points.

Lual Lual Acuil led all scorers with 27 points and 6 rebounds, while Robert Golden added 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists for Al Ahly Libya.
